The Choir of the Eparchy sremska was formed in
1964 in Sremski Karlovci. The choir has been changing the place of its activity several
times during the period of its existence. However, in 1986 when reverend bishop, Mr.
Vassiliy, became the Bishop sremski, the Choir came back into Sremski Karlovci and
continued its successful activities. At that time priests were the only members of the
choir of Eparchy sremska.
The choir had variable success until 1991. Since 1992 the titular name of the Choir
returned to the choir of Homeland museum in Cerevic. Under that name it worked until
October 1997.
Apart from the regular religious service participation, the Choir had very rich and
important concert activity. Among the most successful performances are those in Kolarac,
Frescoes Gallery, National Museum and in the so-called, Russian home.
Its important appearances in Novi Sad are those in the Gallery of Matica Srpska, Srpsko
Narodno Pozoriste (Serbian National Theatre), Synagogue and National Museum.
The Choir gave concerts in Negotin Mokranjcevi dani (Days of Stevan Mokranjac), in
Sombor, Subotica, Zemun, Becej, Srbobran.
At their performances in Greece, Hungary and Russia the members of the choir collected
applause and positive critiques. Several TV broadcasts have been made inland and abroad.
Members of the choir took part even in a movie.
After
November the 1st, 1997 the choir continues its activities as the Choir of Eparchy sremska
"Sveti Nikolaj" (Saint Nokolai).
Sremski Karlovci has a centuries tradition of serbian religious music. In 1794 the
Theological school "Sveti Arsenij" (Saint Arsenie) was founded there, three
years later the first teacher of singing was brought here. Teachers could be only the best
singers. So, the tradition of "Karlovacko paojanij" (Singing of Sremski
Karlovci), later the church choir singing, spread out and became famous and had a good
reputation.
Sremski Karlovci, the residence of the choir, is placed between the hillside of Fruska
gora and the river Danube. It is on the very north-eats of Srem province, about 10 km away
from Novi Sad, which is administrative, political, economical and cultural centre of
Vojvodina. It is also 57 km away Belgrade, the capital of Yugoslavia. This picturesque
city is the place of exceptional cultural inheritance.. .
